Knightmare Chess occurs as fantasy chess variant published by Steve Jackson Games in 1996. These are the translation of the French game ''Tempête sur l'échiquier ("Storm on the Chessboard''"), designed by Pierre Cléquin and Bruno Faidutti.

Knightmare Chess is played by having cards that vary a default rules of chess. the cards can vary how else a piece moves, move opponent's pieces, produce favorite squares on the board or do something possibly wilder. E.g., the card known as Demotion [http://www.sjgames.com/knightmare/img/kc2web02.jpg] says:

There are ii sets of cards sold singly, two consisting of Lxxx cards. A sets come referred to as Knightmare Chess One (ISBN One-55634-332-9) & Knightmare Chess Two (ISBN One-55634-348-Five) however there's nothing in the least to halt a single from either upright shuffling each decks into one 160 card deck.

A graphics in the Knightmcome Chess cards are dark fantasy style, nightmarish (hence the paronomasia Knightmare) color paintings by Brazilian artist Rogerio Vilela.
